How Do You Feel About Giving Birth?
You go from that wonderful moment of a positive pregnancy test, to the prospect of giving birth, often with the stories of friends and family members who did not have good tales to tell in the back of your mind. Among the excitement of awaiting your little one’s arrival, can often be fear of the big day itself. It is common to worry about what sort of experience you will have.
I’m sure you will have heard of a few traumatic birth stories since becoming pregnant, and if this is your first pregnancy, they affect your view of childbirth, can make you feel fearful and make you question whether natural childbirth is safe or even possible. These experiences are valid and do need to be heard, however they are not your story.
If you have had a previous birth that was traumatic, the thought of going through something similar again, can be very distressing. Hypnobirthing will help you through the experience of this pregnancy and birth. Having the calm confidence of Hypnobirthing can change everything.
I have heard many mums to be say “birth is unpredictable, I will just go with the flow on the day.” Yes, birth can be unpredictable, however you have so much power and potential, through Hypnobirthing, to make this birth positive and to await your baby’s arrival feeling safe and secure.
Hypnobirthing is a powerful mind-body approach to birth preparation. Here we’re going to introduce the Hypnobirthing basics and how the techniques aim to work towards helping you have a calm, peaceful, pain-reduced birth.
What is Hypnobirthing?
Hypnobirthing is a childbirth education programme that focuses on physiological birth through mindset work, relaxation, breathing techniques and exploring your birth rights and choices. The method is based on hypnosis and visualisation. With hypnosis, you can achieve a deep state of mind-body relaxation, and deep rooted fears, worries, previous experiences and assumptions about birth are resolved at a subconscious level.
Nicola ihas been a Hypnobirthing instructor for 6 years and is now a trainee Clinical Hypnotherapist with The Cliftonhall Practice. She is working towards achieving a high level of skill, knowledge and expertise in Hypnosis.
Hypnobirthing is evidence based. Approved by Drs, Anaesthetists, Obstetricians, and Midwives, the evidence shows that women who choose Hypnobirthing have:
- Increased control of their birth
- Less need for pain relief
- Shorter labours
- Fewer complications
- Quicker birth recovery
- Happier babies who have not experienced a traumatic birth
What Do Classes Involve?
Hypnobirthing classes are antenatal classes with a difference. The classes are run in small groups in a warm, relaxed and highly welcoming environment. There is underfloor heating, blankets, large floor cushions, tea/coffee and home baking. Nicola spends time getting to know each couple and what is important for you, taking into account any previous birth experiences you have had.
She explains the childbirth information clearly with a wealth of experience and a passion for her subject. Hypnosis is essentially relaxation. It is a highly enjoyable state to experience – calming your body and mind and is very effective from the start.
Nicola offers support and guidance to help you navigate your way from preparation and writing your birth preferences, through to day of your baby’s birth.

Do women find hypnobirthing successful?
The basic premise of hypnobirthing is nothing new in fact it’s been around for many years, it’s where you can learn to be more relaxed and confident during labour.
Parents who choose hypnobirthing often report that they felt much more confident, in control, and able to relax than they did when they used conventional childbirth education techniques.
“Preparing for this birth has really helped me deal with what happened before and I never thought I’d say this but I’m actually looking forward to it!”Megan
First time parents find Hypnobirthing gives them a far more detailed understanding of the birth process, bringing a much clearer, more logical view of the birth process. Parents who are having their second child or more find their experience with Hypnobirthing was worlds apart from their previous births.
Eliminating Fear and Tension
Fear in the mind and body has an impact on birth and can interfere with the progress of labour and the outcome of birth. Hypnobirthing takes care of fear and tension, and instils confidence and calm by working on a subconscious level. This means that you can look forward to the birth of your baby with a very positive mindset.
Hypnobirthing increases the chances of your birth being more straightforward. It is antenatal education with a difference. Hypnobirthing plays a hugely significant role in reducing birth trauma empowering everyone who is preparing for this amazing life event.
Preparing for Success with Hypnobirthing
When you prepare your mind for success in any situation, do you know what? Success is more likely to come. This is hugely important for child birth. The mind and the body work together and the mind controls what the body does – everything it does.
Mental preparation is the key to how our bodies react in labour and birth. Our daily thoughts and feelings, positive or negative, really do influence and shape our life experiences. Turning this around can change everything.
When should I start to learn Hypnobirthing techniques?
Nicola’s Hypnobirthing classes are suitable to start between 20 -30- weeks of your pregnancy. Having plenty of time to prepare your body and mind with a regular practise will give you a significant advantage. Hypnosis is very impactful from the start. Couples say that doing the course has given them a much happier pregnancy with less worry and more contentment.
When you practise hypnosis regularly, your baby also feels the benefits. They are bathed in amniotic fluid which contains all the relaxation hormones, a boost for your baby’s development in the womb – one of the fascinating and deeply meaningful advantages.
Starting up to 30 weeks however will still give you ample time, and even if you are beyond 30 weeks and you have only just heard about Hypnobirthing, Nicola’s Essentials course will be hugely beneficial.
Is Hypnobirthing right for me?
In a word yes. Hypnobirthing improves the experience of child birth no matter what your circumstances are. In the face of any medical complications, Hypnobirthing helps you face whatever circumstances arise, during your pregnancy and or birth.
This is Laura whose first baby was breech (feet facing downwards). During her medical procedure: External Cephalic Version (ECV), to attempt to turn baby, Laura’s hypnosis practise kept her feeling comfortable. Baby’s heart rate stayed very stable, something the Drs have to watch closely as babies can find this procedure distressing.
Laura’s husband commented that he could not believe how relaxed she was. Listening to her hypnosis tracks enhanced her relaxation.
The wonderful thing abut Hypnobirthing is that it is for everyone, even if it has to be medicalised for specific circumstances. If situations outwit your control do arise during your birth, Hypnobirthing allows you to meet them with calm not panic.
The benefits of a calm and relaxed, natural childbirth far outweigh the risks of a bad experience. Hypnobirthing is gaining in popularity because it is so effective.
“The studio is so so relaxing. Fairy lights, essential oils, underfloor heating and lovely big cushions and blankets. I actually feel I could give birth in there, haha! Nicola is really kind and gives you delicious home baking half way through the class. She makes you feel so cared for and welcome.”Natalie
Improving The Fourth Trimester
Having the best birth possible paves the way for a smooth transition into your baby’s early days, for the whole family. When you have been in control of your birth and it has been positive, the endorphins continue to flow and help you to feel the best you can once your baby is here, with less chance of having postnatal anxiety, depression or low mood.
What about support to use the techniques on the day?
After completing Nicola’s 5 week Hypnobirthing course, it is very likely that you will be feeling prepared and confident, maybe even excited at the prospect of bringing your baby into the world. Your partner will also have been educated on their role and given advice, ideas and guidance on how they can support you.
If you do feel you would benefit from more support on the day of your baby’s birth, Nicola is a trained Doula. If you would like the assurance of having her support you emotionally and practically, during your labour, this is a possibility. Nicola can go on call for you 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after your estimated due date. You can find out more about Doulas here.
